Eamonn Fitzmaurice has axed former captain Kieran O'Leary from his panel in a Kingdom shake-up.

Last week Tommy Walsh walked away from the team ahead of the upcoming Munster championship and Fitzmaurice has cut O'Leary, along with Pa Kilkenny, Jack Sherwood, Paul O’Sullivan and Aidan Walsh according to the Irish Examiner.

O'Leary was joint captain with Fionn Fitzgerald when Kerry won their 37th All-Ireland SFC crown with a 2-09 to 0-12 victory over Donegal.

A ruptured achilles tendon meant last summer was a write-off for the Dr Crokes man, and he has now been deemed surplus to requirements.

Fitzmaurice's men were humbled by Dublin in the Allianz Football League Division 1 final two weeks ago, and with a Munster SFC semi-final against either Clare or Limerick in Killarney on 12 June, they'll be banking a serious reaction if they are to figure in the business end of this year's championship.

The Irish Independent is reporting that long-serving Mayo forward Mickey Conroy is amongst a number of players dropped from the Mayo panel as manager Stephen Rochford gears up for the summer campaign.

The Davitt's clubman made his inter-county debut back in 2004 but a shoulder injury has limited his involvement in the last year.

Mark Ronaldson and Mickey Sweeney, who have been on the fringes in recent years, have also been let go, in addition to defender Shane McHale, Neil Douglas and Danny Kirby.

Mayo are going for a sixth Connacht title on the trot and open their defence against London in Ruislip on 29 May.
