Terry Hyland: Cavan must not fear top-flight return

Cavan manager Terry Hyland has urged his players to embrace the county's return to the top flight of Allianz Football League.

A 1-16 to 1-12 victory over Galway at Breffni Park ensured that the Ulster side will be playing in Division 1 in 2017 after a 12-year absence.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport afterwards, Hyland paid tribute to his players.

"It means a lot to the group of lads, as they have worked hard for the last couple of years to get up there," he said.

"Their chart has been progressing and they need to go on now take a trophy out of it at Croke Park in the divisional final. That's what they need to do.

"Overall, I'm delighted for the lads. At the end of the day it's their achievement. Management are there to facilitate and make calls.

As to facing the likes of Dublin, Kerry and Mayo next spring, Hyland added: "We have to embrace that and have no fear when we get up there."

Reflecting on the win over Galway, the Breffni boss felt his side should have profited more from their first-half dominance.

"It was a winner-takes-all game. I thought we had opportunities, more so in the first half than in the second half, to put more on the scoreboard.

"We were creating a lot of attacking opportunities. Maybe we were a little bit nervy, but they are the things we have to learn to control.

"Galway are big, mobile footballers and you have to keep moving around the field with them. Sometimes we do struggle with a more fluid set up. In today's game I thought the subs that came on played a big part."
