Wexford 0-13 Clare 1-16

Chloe Morey’s high scoring didn’t produce a win for Clare in the Irish Daily Star Camogie League Division 1 last week but there was no mistake this time around, as the Bannerwomen registered their first victory over Wexford since rejoining the senior ranks in 2008.

It was a first win too for new manager Patricia O’Grady, who must have been delighted by the style and substance offered up by her players in the enemy territory of Wexford’s GAA Centre of Excellence in Ferns.

It was an amazing contribution by Morey though, who finished with 10 points. Eight of those came from frees as the Clare sharpshooter mercilessly punished the indiscipline of the Wexford girls.

This was a rescheduled round 1 fixture, having fallen foul of the horrible weather conditions initially. A six-point win didn’t seem likely as they trailed by 0-9 to 0-6 at half time, with Linda Bolger keeping the hosts in front.

Disappointingly for the Yellowbellies though, they only managed four points after the resumption, while Clare really got the radar working.

Dual player Niamh O’Dea goaled after 40 minutes to put the Munster side in front and they never looked back. Morey kept the scoreboard ticking over with four points and Wexford never threatened the goal they needed to get back into contention.
