There were two Wash Cup matches today as the 2016 inter-county hurling season began with wins for Laois and Wexford.
Wexford saw off the challenge of IT Carlow by a scoreline of 2-17 to 1-13 in Bunclody in Group 3. Cathal Dunbar and Shane Tomkins got the goals for the Slaneysiders, while they were reduced to 14 men with the sending off of Matthew O’Hanlon.
The Students sent a penalty over the bar before eventually finding the net in the second half, but Ian Byrne’s frees meant Wexford saw the game out easily.
Laois overcame Antrim by 3-17 to 1-19 in their Group 2 clash at Heywood CS in Ballinakill. Seamus Plunkett’s men led by 2-11 to 0-12 at half-time.
Positive news for the Saffrons was the return of Liam Watson for the first time since 2012, while dual star CJ McGourty also made a welcome return to the side.
There are three Walsh Cup matches tomorrow with Offaly v DIT, Meath v Carlow and Westmeath v DCU all throwing-in at 2pm.
