VIDEO: Kieran Donaghy tells referee he's been eye-gouged by Philly McMahon

Fascinating footage of Philly McMahon's flashpoint with Kieran Donaghy during the All-Ireland final provides a bird's-eye view of the moment the Kerry forward claimed to referee David Coldrick that he was eye-gouged on the ground.

All Ireland Day, which was broadcast on RTÉ 1 on Monday night and is available to watch in full on the RTÉ Player, offered a behind-the-scenes look at the build-up and organisation of the biggest day in the Irish sporting calendar.

The programme also offered a unique insight into the thrills and spills of the game itself, with an intriguing view of the action from referee Coldrick's perspective. He wore a microphone for the match and several exchanges can be heard between the official and the players.

McMahon and Donaghy got involved in a few niggling tussles in the run-up to the controversial incident, with McMahon receiving a yellow card minutes before the clash.

After receiving the booking the Ballymun Kickham man is heard to complain: "Donaghy is hitting me when I am trying to make a block. David, I swear to God I didn’t do anything. I didn’t do anything.”

Shortly after that, after Donaghy and McMahon are seen grappling for possession on the ground, with McMahon's hand making contact with the Star's eye. He rises to his feet and protests to the referee: "He gouged my eye on the ground Dave."

McMahon responds: "It’s two boys competing that’s all."

Donaghy has since played down the incident, telling RTÉ Sport: "What happens on the field stays on the field and that's the way I've always played it."

Corner-back McMahon also tried to defuse the situation in the aftermath, adding: "This is Gaelic football and we’re grown men. We play a physical sport and at the end of the day the result is what ends it and we shake hands and get on with it."

He received a one-game ban which Dublin did not appeal.
