Alan Brogan: Dublin must appreciate the good times

Since 2011, Dublin have claimed two All-Ireland titles and a hat-trick of Division 1 league crowns. On Sunday next, the Dubs will be out to regain Sam Maguire when they take on Kerry in this year's decider.

Former Donegal boss Jim McGuinness wrote this week about the strong likelihood that Dublin will be dining at football's top table for some time to come.

While success has been the order of the day in recent times, Alan Brogan, in reflecting on his career, pointed out that things haven't always been as good as they are now.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport, he said: "Coming from where I'm coming from, it was nearly ten years before I played in an All-Ireland final and to that end I'm appreciating every minute of it now."

"I often remind the younger guys that it wasn't always like this. This is our third All-Ireland final in five years. It's important to enjoy these days. They are certainly some of the best days of our lives.

"Huge work has gone on behind the scenes with all the development squads and getting ex-players back involved. I think we are seeing the fruits of that now."

"Kerry v Dublin in an All-Ireland final takes on a life of its own" - Alan Brogan

Brogan has been involved with the Dublin senior set up since 2002. He now mainly performs the role of impact sub, but it's a role he's happy to play in Jim Gavin's squad.

"I needed to buy into the squad ethos like everybody else and I feel I have done that," he added.

"I'm 33 and I'm no spring chicken. Would the legs last at that intensity for 70 minutes at Croke Park on Sunday? Probably not! It's important that when I do get on that I make the most of it. These days won't be around forever."

The strength of Dublin's bench is there for all to see and being able to call on such reserves for Brogan is "one of our core values".

That value has certainly aided the Metropolitans in their quest to reach this weekend's final as further outlined by the St Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh clubman.

"Some of the Leinster games, when I was coming on, were nearly over but we knew at some stage during the year that the subs would be needed to come in and make a huge difference.

"I think against Mayo in the replay we saw five or six guys coming in that really made a difference and that's what ultimately pushed us over the line.

"After 45 minutes, we were four points down and the subs helped to change things. That's why a squad works so hard all year - to make that difference.

"You look at Kevin McManamon getting a goal in each game against Mayo. It's fantastic to have a player like that to come in who can raise the level of a game."

Looking ahead to the challenge of facing Kerry, Brogan is predicting a close encounter.

"Kerry v Dublin in an All-Ireland final takes on a life of its own. It's a huge occasion and it's a game I'm really looking forward to and I'm sure the fans are the same. I think it's going to be very close on the day. We will look to execute our game plan as best we possibly can.

"It'll probably come down to a bit of luck on either side and to which team is more clinical in taking their scores."
