John Evans has stepped down as Roscommon football manager after deciding not to seek reappointment for next season.

Kerry native Evans, who also previously managed Tipperary, took over in 2013 with the Connacht in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League. They will begin 2016 in Division 1.

Roscommon County Board had proposed a new two-year term for Evans, which had been expected to go before the county's clubs for ratification tonight.

The Rossies endured a disappointing championship this summer, which included a shock defeat to Sligo and a qualifier exit to All-Ireland quarter-finalists Fermanagh - although they did beat Cavan and London.

A Roscommon statement said: "John Evans has informed Roscommon GAA of his intention not to seek reappointment to the position of senior football team manager for the 2016 season.

"During his three years in charge John and his management team brought Roscommon from Division Three to Division One of [the] Allianz Football League, capturing two titles in the process and also led the team to the FBD Connacht League title earlier this year.

"They also played an important role in the development of the players and the integration of younger players into the panel.

"The Roscommon GAA executive committee, who had recommended John's reappointment to the clubs and county board delegates, wish to sincerely thank John and his backroom team for their hard work and dedication over the past three years and we wish them well for the future.

"The committee will meet shortly to discuss the difficult task of appointing John's successor."
