An ill-tempered Waterford SHC game between Mount Sion and Dungarvan at Fraher Field on Sunday evening saw three players sent off and a mass brawl involving up to 30 players and mentors.

A spectator recorded footage of the brawl that included a strike to the head with a hurley. The incident lasted for eight minutes towards the end of the first half.

Waterford county player Austin Gleeson of Mount Sion and Dungarvan’s Colm Curran were shown red cards, with match referee Dessie O’Leary issuing a total of eight yellow cards.

Gleeson's red card will not affect his participation in the Munster final on 12 July as any suspensions incurred in the club championship do not affect the inter-county side.

O'Leary's match report will be discussed on Tuesday night at a meeting of Waterford County Board's Competition Controls Committee.

The board will not be commenting until then on what action, if any, will be taken.

After Sunday's game, Dungarvan manager James O'Connor spoke about the fight, saying it was "something no one wants to see but that sometimes things can happen and matters got a small bit out of hand."
