Kevin Walsh has stepped down as manager of the Sligo senior footballers after five seasons in charge.

The Galway native made his decision following Sligo’s 0-15 to 0-08 defeat against Derry in Round 1 of the Football Qualifiers on Sunday evening.

While in charge of the Yeats County, the two-time All-Ireland winner presided over successive promotions in the Allianz League and appearances in two Connacht finals.

After defeat against London in this year’s Connacht Championship, Walsh came in for much criticism on RTÉ’s Sunday Game from former player Eamonn O’Hara.

The latter called on Walsh to step down. However, the Sligo County Board came out in support of the manager and he remained in place until their interest in the 2013 Championship came to an end against Derry.
