Defending champion Robbie McCarthy cruised into the Men's Open Senior Singles quarter-finals of the year's All-Ireland Softball (60X30) Championships.

The Westmeath man easily defeated Kilkenny's Brian Manogue in a one-sided second-round clash in Birr on Saturday.

McCarthy, who claimed his inaugural Men's Open Senior Singles
title of these championships last September, was in devastating form throughout.

In the first game, the 24 year-old was in total control, coasting to an emphatic 21-1 victory.

In the second game the players exchanged points and the score was level at 5-5 before McCarthy hit his stride.

He stormed to a commanding 18-6 lead and though Manogue dug deep to narrow the gap to 19-14, McCarthy reeled-off successive points to close out 21-14 and seal a deserved victory.

Last year's beaten finalist Eoin Kennedy also earned his spot in the quarter-finals when he beat Joe McCann.
