Waterford hurling manager Michael Ryan will be without a number of stars for their Munster Championship opener, with Eoin Kelly set for a lengthy lay-off.

Kelly reportedly fractured his thumb while playing for club Passage East over the weekend and is now a major doubt for the Deise’s Munster semi-final against Clare on 17 June.

Waterford are waiting on x-ray results to discover the extent of damage done.

Ryan may also have to plan without Ballygunner star Shane O’Sullivan. O'Sullivan has just finished college and has expressed his desire to travel abroad for the summer.

Maurice Shanahan is also doubtful after the Lismore man sustained a knock in his hand during their derby win over Ballyduff Upper on Sunday.

Ryan is already planning without defender Noel Connors due to a groin injury, while Under 21 star Paraic Mahony is out for four months following groin surgery.
