Referee Martin Mulholland has died after collapsing at a hurling match in Derry.

Mulholland was refereeing a quarter-final clash between Kevin Lynch's, Dungiven, and St Colm's, Ballinascreen, when he collapsed.

Paramedics, who initially treated Mr Mulholland on the pitch, brought him to the changing rooms, where a defibrillator was used to try and revive him.

He was then brought to Coleraine Hospital, where he later died.

Robert Emmets GAC, Slaughterneil, hurling secretary Damien McEldowney, who is a friend of the family, was at the game and he expressed his shock: "Five minutes in to the second half he got accidentally struck on the leg with the ball. A minute after that he blew the whistle and went down.

All league and championship matches scheduled for this weekend in the county have been postponed as a mark of respect.
