Australia has named a 22-man squad for the International Rules two-test series, with only six members of the panel having experienced the sport previously.

Gold Coast's newest signing Gary Ablett is a surprise omission from the squad.

Ablett is one of the biggest names in Australian Football League and had made himself available for the series.

However, Australia boss Mick Malthouse has decided against bringing Ablett on the tour.

There are 16 new faces in the Australian squad.

Matthew Boyd, Dustin Fletcher, Adam Goodes, Brad Green, Leigh Montagna and Kade Simpson have already experienced the International Rules series.

The Australia team will arrive in Ireland this weekend ahead of the first match in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on 23 October.

The concluding fixture takes place in Croke Park seven days later.
