A special meeting of the Central Council will be held today in response to the recent controversies regarding indiscipline and violence on the field of play.

GAA President Nickey Brennan called the meeting to address the serious issues of indiscipline, lack of respect for authority and the application of disciplinary structures and procedures.

Brennan is believed to be unhappy with the on-going refusal on players and team to accept suspensions and punishment, with the recent fallout from the Cork and Clare hurling fracas appearing to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Cork hurling manager Gerald McCarthy was critical of the GAA President and the disciplinary system.

And while Cork's three suspended players Donal Óg Cusack, Diarmuid O'Sullivan and Sean Óg Ó hAilpín apologised for their role in the fracas before the Cork and Clare clash they also criticised the disciplinary procedures.

In a joint statement the players said: 'We do not believe that we deserved a month's suspension for our parts, or if we did, we did not deserve it any more than any other players.

'It seems that, as evidenced by a recent article, those involved in putting the new disciplinary procedures in place, let alone those administering them, felt pressurised into taking action, to satisfy the media.'
