St Conleth Park in Newbridge is to be sold to finance a new stadium on the outskirts of the town

Kildare County Board last night unanimously approved in principle a plan to construct a 23,000 capacity stadium on a 26-acre site at Old Connell outside Newbridge.

The site has been procured free of charge following protracted negotations with Kildare County Council in accordance with the Newbridge Development Plan.

The project, which will be financed by the sale of the site of the existing St Conleth Park in Newbridge town centre, will also provide Kildare GAA with a state-of-the-art training facility as well as all - weather pitches.

The new campus will form part of the proposed Citygate development which will encompass retail, residential, industrial and office units as well as a hotel and leisure centre.

It is envisaged that the entire project can be completed within three - four years, with the existing county grounds remaining in use in the interim.
