Uncertainty surrounds Rule 42 debate

It is still unclear if the 11 counties that proposed the abolition of Rule 42 will be able to force a debate at congress in April.

Cavan, Clare, Dublin, Galway, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Wicklow had their earlier submissions rejected by the GAA motions committee as they failed to meet certain criteria.

The deadling for motions to be resubmitted passed at 5pm this evening.

The committee is comprised of GAA president Sean Kelly, director-general Liam Mulvihill and former GAA presidents.

Kelly is known to be in favour of opening Croke Park to other sports but he faces stiff resistance from the old guard.

With the redevelopment of Lansdowne Road scheduled to commence in 2006, a swift outcome is now of huge importance.

A compromise has been suggested in the form of a temporary suspension to cater for major sporting events.
