Former Cork hurler Setanta Ó hAilpín has been called up to the Carlton senior panel after less than seven months as an Australian Football League hopeful. His elevation to the first team squad from the feeder club, Northern Bullants, is extraordinary as he wasn't expected to make the grade until next season.
But 'Carlos', as he is known by team-mates, has been drafted in to replace the injured Anthony Franchina – out for eight weeks.
Club coach Denis Pagan admitted that he wouldn't be playing on Saturday against Adelaide, but admitted that it was only a matter of time.
He said on Carlton's official website, www.carltonfc.com.au: "He's not playing, so unfortunately he has to wait to another day. He's played very well the last two weeks, but VFL to AFL senior football (is a big step up). He's still got a bit of work to do,"
He went on: "He was very excited and he's such an enthusiastic guy and the reason why is just because the way he goes about his footy (and) the way he prepares. You come down here and you'll see him for two hours kicking for goal and practicing his deficiencies. He just really wants to get better."
"You just look at his work rate. He came here at 88 kilos - he's now 96. He wants to do everything that has to be done to make it and nothing's going to distract him and he puts a lot of guys (to shame)."
Ó hAilpín, 21-years-old, was the young hurler of the year in Ireland last year before moving to Australia to embark on an AFL career.
