Galway All Star hurler Ollie Canning led his club, Portumna, to victory in this year's Galway SHC final against Loughrea on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-09. Portumna's goals came from Andrew Smith and Kevin Hayes.
In the Munster Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final, Patrick's Well of Limerick defeated Clare champions Clarecastle by two points. Eoin Foley and Declan O'Grady scored the goals for Patrickswell. The Limerick men advance to play the winners of the Waterford SHC final, due to be played in a fortnight.
In football, St Patrick's of Louth rocked The Downs of Westmeath thanks to three goals in the last five minutes of the game from Damien Connor (2) and Sean White.
In the Ulster SFC replay Four Masters of Donegal edged out Monaghan's Castleblayney by the minimum of margins on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-10. 'Blayney lost Kieran Tavey in the 9th minute for a late challenge on Barry Dunnion. The Monaghan men were dealt another blow a minute later when Four Masters' Rory O'Donnell hit the net. The Faughs rallied towards the end, with three points unanswered, but it was simply too little too late. Four Masters next face Cavan Gaels in their quarter-final next Sunday.
