Top GAA official conferred with honorary degree

Liam Mulvihill, Director General of the GAA, has been awarded an honorary degree by the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. The Longford native received his Doctor of Laws degree at a ceremony attended by the GAA president, Sean McCague.

The former primary school teacher and Department of Education Inspector took up his position with the GAA in 1979. He won a senior All-Ireland colleges medal as a schoolboy at St Mel's College, Longford, and has also played at minor, Under-21 and senior levels for his county.

Congratulating him on the award, GAA President Sean McCague said: "I share with the membership of the GAA, our delight that Liam has received this honour from the National University of Ireland. Liam has dedicated his life to the Gaelic Athletic Association and to education in this country."

Mulvihill's greatest legacy will be the ultra-modern facilities at Croke Park, which are still under development. "The Croke Park redevelopment programme now nearing conclusion will forever be a manifestation of his vision, courage, intellect and expertise generally," said McCague.
