Westmeath manager Brendan Lowry has vacated the post in the aftermath of his charges loss to Dublin in the Leinster semi-final. Lowry has been in the hot seat for the past three years, during a time when Westmeath emerged as competitive challengers in Leinster, aided by the success of their minor and Under-21 teams. The six-month ban Lowry received following the O'Byrne Cup clash with Longford earlier in the year has soured his time with Westmeath and has influenced the decision of the former Offaly player to move on.
Lowry now feels that the time is right for a new face that can develop the side into a winning combination, which it is hoped will occur sooner rather than later, on the back of their 1999 All-Ireland Under-21 victory.
