GAA: Sheerin and Moran quit their positions

Gay Sheerin last night quit as Roscommon manager after three seasons in charge. He came under fierce criticism after Roscommon’s shock defeat at the hands of Leitrim in the Connacht semi-final a month ago. In his first year in charge he led his team to the Connacht final only to loose the replay to a Galway team who went on to win the All-Ireland. Roscommon then went on to gain promotion to Division 1 in the league and the future looked bright for Roscommon football until Mayo hammered them in the Championship.

This season they again performed well in the league but the defeat against Leitrim overshadowed any progress made by Roscommon under Sheerin. The backroom staff of Sean Kilbride and Gerry Fitzmaurice has also left. Fitzmaurice said, "Progress is measured in Championship terms. It’s cruel, but that’s the way it is. We had made good strides during the league but didn’t deliver on the big day."

Micky Moran, the Sligo Football manager has also quit, resigning in the wake of the heavy Connacht semi-final defeat to Galway.
