GAA: Football All-Stars announced

There were ten first time winners when the Football All-Stars were announced at the Burlington Hotel last night. All-Ireland Champions Meath took seven awards with four for beaten All-Ireland finalists and League Champions Cork. Two players from Armagh made the team with one each from Mayo and Dublin.

Meath's John McDermott and Trevor Giles both claimed their third All-Star while Meath captain Graham Geraghty, selected at full forward on this year's team, previously won an All-Star Award in 1994 as a defender.

Trevor Giles was named footballer of the year for the second time with Cork captain Philip Clifford, young footballer of the year. Brian Corcoran was chosen as hurler of the year with his Cork teammate Diarmuid OSullivan, the young hurler of the year.
