Darren McCurry: Tyrone powered by hurt of Armagh defeat

Tyrone attacker Darren McCurry said the "hurt" of the narrow defeat against Armagh had been a motivating factor as they turned over Roscommon in Hyde Park in Round 1 of the All-Ireland SFC.

Ethan Jordan's last-minute free settled a thrilling contest, which appeared to be heading for extra-time after Paul Carey scored a levelling two-pointer for the Connacht champions.

It was something of a statement win for Malachy O'Rourke's side, who have now put in two strong championship displays after an extremely underwhelming league.

"Coming in here, we knew it was going to be a massive battle," McCurry told RTÉ Sport after the game.

"Them coming off a massive victory and us coming off a loss. The boys battled right to the end and we knew coming down here it was going to go right to the end.

"The two goals in the first half were massive but as you've seen with the games all over the weekend, a five, six-point lead is nothing in today's game.

"I think that's good for the game, it leaves it that the game is wide open right to the end and anybody can win."

Tyrone's stock had fallen sharply after an abject league campaign, in which their expected promotion push in Division 2 failed to materialise at all, leaving them languishing in fifth place at the finish.

They did rouse themselves to push Armagh to extra-time, losing by a single point to the eventual Ulster champions. After a long hiatus, they trooped down the Hyde to turn over a Roscommon team on a high after their memorable provincial triumph.

"We thought we left that game [against Armagh] behind us and obviously we were very hurt," said McCurry.

"We put a lot of emphasis in the Armagh game and as you say getting beat by a point was very hard for the boys to take.

"We thought we left a lot of chances behind us that day.

"We know it's just one win, it takes a wee bit of pressure off it. We've been struggling to get the wins through this season.

"It's just great to see everybody out in the field here, all the Tyrone supporters that have travelled down and spent the hard-earned money."

The win sends Tyrone into Round 2A alongside the other winners from Round 1 - with Donegal, Cork and Galway already safely into the 'winners round' after yesterday.

Goalkeeper Niall Morgan said his team still had kinks to iron out despite the victory, acknowledging that they may have benefitted from the longer lay-off ahead of the game.

"There's plenty of rust. We're not going to get carried away by this. You'd see Roscommon burst themselves to their limits going through Connacht.

"We had a bit of a break so it probably stood to us. There's plenty of stuff to tidy up. Conceding 2-18 and Roscommon missed a bit. We've plenty to tidy up. We'll be under no illusions.

"There's nothing easy about coming here. We didn't get the usual elements that Hyde Park brings. The weather is perfect, the pitch is perfect.

"These are the championship days that you look forward to and thankfully, we got the result."
