Ten years on from their last championship meeting, Roscommon came out all guns blazing at Gaelic Park and powered five goals past New York to book a place in the Connacht Senior Football Championship semi-finals.
The Rossies made a dream start, with Enda Smith rattling the net just seconds into the game after a blistering opening attack. The sides then exchanged points before New York struck back in style, Jack McKenna finishing to the net at the back post to level matters and ignite the Gaelic Park crowd.
Roscommon's response was immediate and emphatic. Charging straight down the other end, Rob Heneghan restored their advantage with a goal, and further scores from play by Daire Cregg and a 45 from goalkeeper Conor Carroll stretched the lead to five inside the opening 10 minutes.
Conor Keenan pulled a point back for the Exiles, but Roscommon quickly found their rhythm again. Carroll added another 45 before Dylan Ruane fired home their third goal, beating Joey Grace to make it 3-04 to 1-02. The floodgates were well and truly open.
Darragh Heneghan hammered in a fourth goal on 19 minutes and an Eoin Ward point followed immediately to leave it 4-07 to 1-03. Sensing blood, Roscommon struck again, Eoin McCormack blasting home their fifth goal in a devastating spell of attacking football.
The sides traded frees through Cregg for the Rossies and Jack McKennafor the Exiles, before a Keith Doyle point added to Roscommon tally. The game then had a flashpoint moment when referee Brendan Cawley produced a straight red card for Cregg following an off the ball incident with Eoghan McGelligott.
Despite being reduced to 14 men, Roscommon finished the half in style, with Sennan Lambe curling over an excellent two-pointer to cap a dominant opening half and give the travelling team a commanding 5-11 to 1-04 lead at the break.
Mark Dowd's men picked up where they left off after the restart, surging further ahead with four unanswered points from Robert and Darragh Heneghan, Diarmuid Murtagh and Conor Hand to stretch their advantage to 23 points by the 48th minute.
To their credit, New York kept battling. Frank O’Reilly was a bright spark in the second half, landing three frees and two points from play, while Killian Butler also chipped in with a brace late on.
Enda Smith added two more points to round off an impressive personal display as Roscommon completed a comprehensive 5-22 to 1-10 victory, heading back across the Atlantic with confidence high.
They now march on to face Mayo in the Connacht semi finals in two weeks’ time, while New York turn their attention to the Tailteann Cup.
