A well-prepared London side put Carlow's hopes of promotion on hold when they deservedly came away from Netwatch Cullen Park with an excellent 1-20 to 0-18 Allianz Football League Division 4 victory.
London roared into the contest from the opening whistle, with Ciaran Diver landing two points as they harassed a home side who struggled to come up to the pace of their rivals.
Eleven minutes in, the visitors led 0-08 to 0-01 and were good value for their lead. Midfielder Liam Gallagher scored four points in the opening half, including an excellent two-pointer.
Ross Dunphy was Carlow’s main threat, scoring three points. A Conor Doyle two-pointer gave the home side hope that they could turn it around.
Undaunted, London tacked on points from Gallagher and Shay Rafter as Carlow had the final word of the half with a Chris Blake free to leave the visitors 0-10 to 0-06 ahead at the change of ends.
Carlow threw all they had at their opponents in the second half but the Exiles always seemed to be able to keep the home side at arm’s length.
A sticky defence gave Carlow little chance to get in clear shots. Colm Hulton did score four points but none from outside the D.
They did create a number of goal chances in the second half and three times London goalkeeper Andrew Walsh brought off brilliant point-blank saves.
Carlow got within two points of their rivals with eight minutes to go, but it was to no avail as a London attack saw Liam Murphy ghost in behind the defence and he made no mistake from close range.
The finish all but confirmed an away victory and they battled hard to the end to confirm their dominance.
In injury time, the home side were awarded a penalty. Carlow misery was complete when the London keeper dived to his left to deny Conor Doyle, a cameo of much of what had gone on before as the visitors celebrated an excellent win.
