Mayo's early-season energy not a surprise, says Dessie Dolan

The mood music out of Mayo early on in Andy Moran's reign is creating a positive vibe for now, says former Westmeath player and manager Dessie Dolan.

It's two wins from two so far in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League, this after deserved victories against Galway and Dublin.

There has been an added vitality to what Mayo are producing, with Ryan O'Donoghue orchestrating things brilliantly at No 11, while newcomers like Darragh Beirne and Cian McHale are also showing their worth.

The Connacht men are are now showing a greater liking for going for two-pointers when the opportunity presents itself.

All good for now ahead of what should be their toughest examination so far, when heading to Letterkenny to take on the also-unbeaten Donegal on Sunday next.

Speaking on the latest edition of the RTÉ GAA Podcast, Dolan, in commenting on where the green and red are now at, said: "There is a great energy with Mayo at the minute and that's to be expected.

"It's easy for Andy at the minute because when you're winning matches everything is good.

"It's when you lose a match questions start to come but at the minute his share price is up. The mood is good, people are talking about them. He's smiling when giving his interviews after games and everything seems positive. But when the clouds come and you lose a game in Mayo, it can be a tough place to be.

"That will come, that is just part and parcel of things."

The contribution of Belmullet's Ryan O'Donoghue was also highlighted

"He is having a massive impact at centre-forward," Dolan added.

"He was able to tangle with Seán McMahon the last day (against Dublin) and is such a tenacious player. He gets stuck into everything but out at centre-forward he is controlling a lot of games, kicks a lot of points, a lot of two-pointers as well.

"He has Jack Carney beside him and Paddy Durcan is back into the team. And now he and Mayo are heading up to face Jim McGuinness and that will be fascinating."

Dolan, an admirer of the Donegal coach in the way "he's always trying to push the needle a little bit more".

And he's expecting last year's All-Ireland beaten finalists to further evolve.

"Last year they were absolutely incredible with their running power all over the pitch, their style of play, those two-pointers. They were a joy to watch.

"The All-Ireland final performance was a bit frustrating for Jim.

"It was mentioned to him that he went man-on-man against Dublin the first day. The reference was that he dropped off against Paudie Clifford in the All-Ireland final. Paudie was up on 60 to 70 in that final and he ran the show effectively. When you sit back and analyse it, I think they were trying to curb the influence of David (Clifford) inside of him with a man covering him, so allowing Paudie to get on the ball more.

"In the cold light of day it just didn't work out. Jim and the boys on the sideline were aware of it but they didn't counteract it enough to effect the game at the time.. and that was the frustration.

"The one thing Jim does is he evolves, he changes, and he adapts. When you look at his teams he's trying to innovate as much as he can in getting ready for the All-Ireland series.

"This year we again see the high press and runners coming from everywhere, holding on to Michael Murphy and then introducing him. I'm always fascinated with what Jim McGuinness brings to it, just a fascinating character."
