Donegal captain Paddy McBrearty has retired from inter-county football on medical advice.

The Kilcar man was one of the most gifted forwards the Tir Chonaill County ever produced and picked up seven Ulster titles as well as Sam Maguire glory in 2012 in what was the county's second-ever All-Ireland success.

While injuries hampered a number of campaigns, with a persistent knee injury ultimately bringing his Donegal career to an end, McBrearty still made a massive impact and last appeared in July’s All-Ireland final loss to Kerry – replacing Oisín Gallen in the 49th minute.

His decision to step aside leaves Michael Murphy as the sole panel member left from that 2012 final win over Mayo.

McBrearty made 167 appearances for his county having first appeared as both a minor and senior on the same day against Antrim in 2011.

"Patrick has had an extraordinary career and has set the bar extremely high for the next generation," said Donegal chairperson Mary Coughlan.

"He’s been a tremendous ambassador for Donegal GAA and has carried himself with dignity both on and off the field. His retirement leaves a great void but the player has been plagued by injury in recent seasons.

"Of course, we must also remember that Patrick joined an elite group back in 2011 when he played county minor and senior championship football on the same day in Ballybofey against Antrim while still a secondary school student in Carrick.

"It is fitting that leaves with a record haul of medals and since being appointed captain in 2022, he has always led by example and worn the county jersey with fierce pride and distinction."

Niall Kelly has also retired having brought his Kildare career to an end.

The Athy man's decision was confirmed just over a week after his club’s Leinster final defeat to Ballyboden.

His last appearance for the Lilywhites came in this year’s Tailteann Cup semi-final win over Fermanagh, coming on for the final seven minutes at Croke Park.

Niall Kelly scored 14 goals for Kildare

Kelly made his debut as a 19-year-old in a 2013 O’Byrne Cup final win over Dublin and would go on to make 101 appearances for the Leinster side scoring 14-138 in the process.

"Popular with his fellow club and county players, we wish Niall all the very best for the next chapter in his life," Kildare GAA said.

"Niall would like to sincerely thank his family, club and everyone involved in Kildare GAA for their unwavering support throughout his career."

As well as this year’s Tailteann Cup, Kelly also won a Leinster Under-21 title with the side in 2013.
