Former Monaghan captain Kieran Duffy has become the latest Oriel name to call time on his inter-county career.

The Latton defender, who captained the Ulster side for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, joins Darren Hughes and Karl O'Connell in stepping away from Gabriel Bannigan’s side in recent weeks.

Duffy made his championship debut back in 2010 when he came off the bench in a clash with Kildare and started the county’s two most recent provincial triumphs – in 2013 and 2015. He also won two Division 2 titles, a Division 3 crown and a McKenna Cup.

"Representing Monaghan GAA down through the years has always been a great privilege and honour," said Duffy.

"I’ve been incredibly lucky to have played with great teammates, shared memories, had the laughs, ups and downs and made lifelong friendships.

"To all the managers and coaches that have guided me through the years, thank you.

Thanks to the Monaghan supporters that have always been there in good and bad times.

"Most importantly my family, your support, sacrifices and belief made this journey possible. I will never be able to thank you enough."

It’s a blow for manager Bannigan who admitted that he hoped to have the player on board for the 2026 season.

"I was hoping Kieran would return for another season, he performed very well in Latton’s championship campaign, and I thought he might give it one more season, but Kieran is 35 next March and I completely respect his decision.

"He knows his body better than anyone else and I wish him every success in everything he does in the future."
