Leitrim have extended senior football manager Steven Poacher's tenure by two years.

The Down native was originally appointed in October 2024 after Mickey Graham abruptly cut short his weeks-long tenure to instead join Padraic Joyce's Galway back-room team.

Poacher's first year in charge of Leitrim started on a difficult note as the county finished bottom of Allianz Football League Division 3 without picking up a single point.

The nadir came when Leitrim forfeited a league match against Fermanagh due to an acute injury crisis within the camp and commitments to their Under-20 team who had an upcoming fixture against Galway.

At the time, Poacher told RTÉ Sport: "It's an unfortunate set of circumstances. We're probably in unprecedented territory in that we are the one county in Ireland that has six U-20 players that are on the panel - and that five of them started most National League games this year.

"We have a new panel, a young panel, with 20 players coming in who have never played county football before so they have been exposed towards a heavier load of training, S&C and games. We have played five weeks in a row after our first game against Laois was postponed because of (Storm Éowyn)."

Following the league campaign, Leitrim lost to eventual champions Kildare and Sligo in the group stage of the Tailteann Cup but ended their campaign on with a win after beating Tipperary in Mullingar.

In a statement confirming Poacher's reappointment as manager, Leitrim GAA said that it "confirms approval for the reappointment of Steven Poacher as senior football manager on a two-year term, subject to ratification at the next meeting of Leitrim GAA County Committee on September 8th."
