Andy Moran is set to become the new manager of the Mayo senior footballers, with the county board to ratify the appointment of the Ballaghaderreen clubman at its next meeting.

Moran takes over from Kevin McStay, whose three years at the helm came to an end after the green and red were knocked out of this year's championship at the All-Ireland group stage.

The new management ticket will include former Mayo player Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally, who recently managed Derry and before that was part of the Kerry backroom team, helping the county to their All-Ireland success in 2022.

Moran had a lengthy inter-county career as a player. Across 17 seasons, he won eight Connacht titles, two National League medals and was twice an All-Star. In 2017 he was named Footballer of the Year.

Three Sigerson wins with IT Sligo and two county titles with his club also adorn his sideboard.

After retiring, Moran was named Leitrim manager in 2021, securing promotion to Division 3 in 2024. He subsequently took up a coaching role with Monaghan, working alongside manager Gabriel Bannigan as the Farney reached this year's All-Ireland quarter-final.

Former Sligo manager Tony McEntee was also under consideration. He was previously involved with Mayo during Stephen Rochford's time in charge from 2016 to 2018.

Mayo endured a somewhat frustrating 2025 despite reaching the Division 1 league final and a second successive Connacht decider, where they again lost narrowly to Galway.

Rochford filled in as interim manager when McStay was forced to step back due to health reasons from the end of May.

Defeat at home to Cavan in their opening All-Ireland group game was costly; the head-to-head rule saw them fail to progress to the knockout phase.

Moran will no doubt be tasked in 2026 with maintaining Mayo's top-flight status in the league, ending the county's five-year wait for a provincial crown and being involved at the business end of the Sam Maguire race.
