Galway manager Pádraic Joyce hopeful that John Maher injury is 'not too bad'

Galway manager Pádraic Joyce is hoping the ankle injury picked up by John Maher in the win over New York will not be a cause for concern, with the player set for a scan upon his return home.

The 2024 All-Star left the field of play after 17 minutes in Galway's Connacht SFC quarter-final clash at Gaelic Park, a game the Tribe County eventually went on to win comfortably.

"I was quite worried the way he went down," was Joyce's initial reaction, when speaking to RTÉ Sport.

"He seems to be walking fine but we'll get a scan when we get home. He is such a key part, a key warrior and we'll get him looked after. Hopefully it's not too bad."

Shane Walsh and Damien Comer did not start for the reigning provincial champions, with the Galway boss admitting that a number of personnel were not match fit.

"We had seven or eight little niggle injuries today and we couldn't chance lads the way they were," he said.

"They weren't fit to play. We had the best XV available to us and that's all we can do. Every time we train is to make sure we have the best lads available."

Next up for the Tribesmen is a date with Roscommon in the Connacht semi-final on Easter Sunday. And after what he saw in the Bronx, Joyce knows there are a few things to work on.

"We didn't play overly well in the first half but in the third quarter we pulled away and were comfortable enough in the end. The ticket was to get into a semi-final which we've done against Roscommon in two weeks' time.

"There were a few things I wouldn't be happy about in the first half. We carried the ball into trouble a fair bit and there were kickouts we did not contest properly, wrong lads jumping."
