Fermanagh sink Laois to end league campaign on a high

A stirring final quarter from Fermanagh deservedly gave them both points in a well-contested affair, at Brewaster Park.

The Ernesider's’ slim chance of promotion to Division evaporated with Kidlare beating Antrim-but they will take loads of positives from this fine comeback ahead of their opening Ulster Championship first round clash with Down in Brewster Park on 20 April.

It looked bleak for the home side as two goals early in the second half had pushed Laois to a 2-12 to 1-10 lead fifteen minutes from time.

But, as in their remarkable comeback against Sligo, the introduction of big men like Conor McGee and Brandon Horan changed the course of the game as the home side outscored Laois by 0-08 to 0-01 in that final quarter.

Niall Corbett rifled Laois into the lead which was quickly negated when Erne captain Declan McCusker played a one-two with Joe McDade and pointed.

The accurate Ronan Coffey put Laois back in front. He then hit the score of the half after executing superb dummy before arcing over a fine two pointer to put his side into a 0-04 to 0-01 lead.

Fermanagh hit back with a well struck point from Sean Cassidy before the hit the nest after eleven minutes.

Largo Ellis kicked Fermanagh's insurance point at the death

A long ball saw midfielder Joe McDade put through and his shot was well saved by Laois keeper Killian Roche but Paul Breen palmed the loose ball to the Laois net.

Lee Cullen landed another point for the home side after a ponderous move from the Ernesiders as Coffey replied with a single point to leave Fermanagh leading by 1-03 to 0-05.

Laois keeper Killian Roche landed a two-pointer free as Ryan Lyons had a chance of a goal for Fermanagh but blazed over the bar to leave the home side leading by 1-06 to 0-08.

But the Ernesiders continued to stretch their lead as Jones converted a close in free after referee Enda McFeeley punished Laois for dissent, and Fionan O’Brien then put three points between the sides.

However the Ernesiders hit four bad wides on the spin as Laois roared back into contention.

In a lightning counter-attack which exposed gaps in the Erne defence, Pa Kirwan found centre forward Niall Corbett who coolly picked his spot to level matters in the 44th minute.

And although Josh Largo Ellis and Jones made it 1-10 to 1-09 for the home side-the momentum was with Laois as they had points from the excellent Brian Byrne and Corbett.

The Ernesiders were looking very vulnerable to the direct running of Ronan Coffey and Mark Barry and Laois hit another goal as Byrne slid the ball home with the greatest of ease.

An increasingly dominant Laois increased the lead through Barry and Byrne as they led by 2-12 to 1-10.

Fermanagh threw on the towering Conor McGee and Brandon Horan and it had an immediate effect as the Ernesiders started to win ball in the middle third.

Another big man, Darragh McGurn began the comeback with a punched point as Fermanagh also brought on Che Cullen to add even more height and physicality.

But it took a superb save from Fermanagh keeper Sean McNally to stop Laois’s Kirwan from hitting a potentially killer third goal. Byrne added a fine point for Laois to put them into a 2-13 to 1-11 lead.

Jones landed a mighty two pointer from a free outside the arc and Largo Ellis added another to leave just two points between the sides to set up a frenetic finish.

Corbett had a great chance of pointing for Laois, but his effort for goal was easily cleared. It was all Fermanagh and points from O’Brien and sub- Conor Love levelled the match.

And two final points from Jones and Largo Ellis sealed the deal in a remarkable comeback.
