Brian Kennedy: Win over Dublin 'a must' for Tyrone to beat Allianz League drop

Nothing but victory over Dublin in Omagh will suffice Tyrone in Sunday's final round of action in Allianz Football League Division 1, according to the Red Hand county's captain Brian Kennedy.

Tyrone go into Round 7 of the competition on five points, a sliver above the drop zone and level on points with Armagh below them - but with an eight-point score advantage over the reigning All-Ireland champions.

If Malachy O'Rourke's side better Armagh's result against already-relegated Derry, it would be enough to ensure Tyrone's survival in the top tier.

However, a win over Dublin and the valuable maximum points that would bring is the only permutation on Kennedy's mind.

"Two points is definitely a must on Sunday. That's probably the only result that will keep us safe," the 2021 All-Ireland winner told RTÉ Sport at an Allianz Football League media briefing in Dundalk.

"We can just do our job then see what way the cards fall after that but it's going to be no small task against Dublin.

"They're motoring well and we'll need to be on top of our game to get a result there.

The survival battle is finely poised in Division 1

"The Dublin crowd bring a deadly atmosphere and you always lift your game when you're playing against them too.

"They've been the standard-bearers this past ten years. We're really looking forward to it and looking forward to the challenge."

Kennedy also doffed his cap to the Dubs' veteran medal-laden goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton who's back for another year in blue at the age of 43.

"He's unbelievable. He's got serious longevity there. I've seen the stat of 24 years playing senior inter-county which is crazy and he's still as good as ever," he said.

"So we need to be on top of our game and try to shut him down or try break even with him anyway. In the kick-outs, it will not be an easy job but we look forward to it."

If Tyrone need a confidence boost, they will take some encouragement from their six-point triumph over an albeit much-changed Donegal in Letterkenny last weekend.

"Any day you go out against Donegal and get two points, it's a good day," Kennedy said.

"They've a good system working there and Jim McGuinness, everybody's rowing in behind him and they're going very well.

"So we were glad to go up there and get a good test and thankfully got the win."

This year also sees Kennedy make the step up from vice-captain of the senior county team to the skipper and it's a role he is relishing.

"It's a massive honour, it's one that I don't take lightly and I'm happy to take on," he said.

"Just looking back at the lads who have been in that role over this past number of years, it's a massive achievement and thankfully there's still a number of them guys knocking about the panel for advice and there to lean on anytime."

And the midfielder, who will turn 27 at the end of the month, has found Tyrone manager O'Rourke's first year in charge to his liking thus far.

"It's been enjoyable. Every person looks at football differently and brings their own little snippets and adds to the group, and Malachy has definitely done that," he said.

"He's brought in a serious knowledge and serious belief into the group and the players are loving it."

And as he looks to propel himself into the meat of the inter-county summer, Kennedy remains buoyed by a positive period for his club Derrylaughan Kevin Barrys who won the Tyrone Intermediate championship last year and got to the Ulster semi-finals where they were narrowly pipped to a spot in the provincial decider by Ballinderry.

"It was great scenes in Derrylaughan, it was a great time for us," he said.

"It had been a long time since we'd tasted championship success and thankfully we got over the line this year and got a good run in Ulster as well.

"It was great for the club and great for the youth around the area and it's brought the thing on very well."
