Longford's promotion hopes are very much in their own hands after this victory over Carlow in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
This defeat means that Carlow will remain in Division 4 next year.
The first half was very poor fare. Both sides played with a number of men behind the ball and scores were at a premium for the first 20 minutes.
Mark Hughes opened the scoring for Longford in the second minute. Mikey Bambrick replied for Carlow before a free from Liam Gavin to edge them in front.
Hughes scored his second but it was cancelled out by a fantastic long range free from the boot of Conor Doyle.
After their slow start Longford got into their rhythm and kicked four points in a row. Ruairi Harkin kicked over an excellent score to draw them level. That was followed by a fantastic effort from Paddy Kiernan before Daniel Reynolds and Hughes kicked over neat scores as Longford were ahead by three points at the break - 0-06 to 0-03.
Despite starting well Carlow struggled for scores after their point from Doyle in the 20th minute.
Longford started the second half with a fine point from Harkin. Jordan Morrissey kicked over a fine point for the visitors in the 40th minute; their first score in over 20 minutes of football.
Darren Gallagher opened his account with a free in the 41st minute. He followed that with a '45 before he kicked over a sublime score from a free to extend Longford’s lead to six points in the 45th minute.
Aaron Amond scored a point in the 48th minute for the Carlow men. They needed a goal and Johnny Murphy slipped when chasing a loose ball, in a dangerous position minutes later.
Morrissey kicked over a fine point in the 58th minute as Carlow enjoyed possession but Longford defended in numbers. Bambrick grabbed his second in the 63rd minute but Longford broke with Hughes kicking over his fifth point to leave five between them.
With the clock ticking down Carlow pressed for that goal. They were denied twice by excellent defending from Liam Hughes and Ryan Moffett in the 70th minute. One minute later Jamie Clarke blasted the ball over the bar when it was easier to kick it under.
Longford finished the game well with points from Mimnagh and Daniel Reynolds.

London 1-13 Waterford 0-11
Oran Kerr's injury-time goal secured London's first win of the campaign as they accounted for Waterford for five points.
The Exiles had earned a point in their last home assignment against Tipperary and they led by the minimum at half-time in Ruislip, 0-06 to 0-05.
However, the visitors appeared to have turned the tables in the second half, muscling into a 0-11 to 0-09 lead with five minutes of normal time remaining.
But a trio of points from Ciaran Diver, Tighe Barry and DJ O'Flaherty nudged London back in front, with Waterford finishing with 13 men following a black card for Daniel Clarke and a red for Liam Fennell.
Kerr's goal four minutes into injury-time settled it before Liam Gallagher's free rounded off the win.
