Watch: Issues facing Football Review Committee debated

RTÉ GAA analyst Eamonn Fitzmaurice discussed the issues facing the new Football Review Committee, of which he is a member, on Allianz League Sunday last night.

The 2014 All-Ireland winning manager is part of a big-hitting committee, under the chairmanship of Jim Gavin, with James Horan and Malachy O'Rourke also involved.

While Fitzmaurice says the grouping haven't met up yet, he said his own preference was for rule tweaks which create more contests and collisions rather than methodical possession based play.

In Fitzmaurice's estimation, packed defences were the root cause of this turn in the game, with teams having fewer forwards in an advanced position to whom they can kick direct ball. The heavily-manned defences also militate against long ball, with teams having to carefully pick apart the opposition in a more measured fashion.

"For me personally when teams put 15 players behind their own 45 they have a limited attacking ability and that is the cause of the exhaustive possession-based football," Fitzmaurice said.

"That isn't the most attractive thing in the world. I like contact and collisions and that takes that out of the game."

One proposal that the former Kerry manager and player would like see is a situation where three players must be positioned inside both 45s.

However, Fitzmaurice did point out some negatives with this idea and added: "What happens when a strong team plays a weak team? That's not going to help. How do you referee it a club level? There are all those considerations."

On encouraging sides to go for more scores, Fitzmaurice mentioned 0-02 being awarded for a long-range point and also referenced the back pass and the introduction of a shot clock as other topics that the committee may also address.
