Kerry v Derry player ratings: Another David Clifford masterclass

Kerry are just one win away from back-to-back All-Ireland titles after a comeback victory over Derry at Croke Park.

The Ulster champions led as late as the 67th minute but the men from the Kingdom showed character to pull the result out of the bag.

Here's how we rated the players.

KERRY

Shane Ryan - 6

Echoes of Harald Schumacher in his challenge on Shane McGuigan in the first half but he wasn't pulled up on it. Instead, he continued the run to score a point.

Made a brilliant save from McKinless on 52 minutes as he shot for goal.

Graham O'Sullivan - 6

Read the play and got in to cut out a Derry pass on 39 minutes after a long period of play for the Ulster champions.

Pushed an effort wide on 61 minutes under little pressure as Kerry sought to cut the then two-point deficit.

Jason Foley - 6

Kicked a scoreable chance wide in the 15th minute. Read the play very well to steal possession back for Kerry in the 18th minute, with the attack ending up in an equalising score.

Reacted quickest on 44 minutes after an effort from Rogers came back off the post.

Tom O'Sullivan - 6

Made an important block inside the opening 60 seconds to prevent a goal chance for Derry. Floated a beautiful pass for David Clifford, who claimed a mark, in the first minute of first-half added time.

Tried to chip the ball over the retreating Odhran Lynch on 43 minutes but pushed the effort wide to the right.

Paul Murphy - 6

A quiet afternoon for the Rathmore man who was replaced on 55 minutes.

Tadhg Morley - 6

Could do little to prevent Derry's opening goal, although his save ultimately fed the ball into the path of Gareth McKinless.

Did well to force McKinless away from goal in the 46th minute as Derry looked for a second goal.

Gavin White - 6

Made the lung-busting run for Kerry's first goal, and had the simplest of tasks to finish to the empty net.

Diarmaid O’Connor - 6

Kicked a fine score to bring ten minutes without a Kerry score to an end (17th minute). Was black-carded in the 28th minute for a trip on Rogers.

Jack Barry - 6

Got in a block on Lynch on 50 minutes as the Derry keeper looked to kick a point. Was booked for a high challenge on McGuigan a minute later.

Dara Moynihan - 5

One of the more quiet afternoons for Moynihan, who lasted an hour before being replaced by Micheál Burns on 59 minutes.

Seán O'Shea chipped in with four points for Kerry

Seán O’Shea - 7

Selflessly hand-passed the ball across goal for White's major.

Cut the gap down to one on 38 minutes with a lovely effort off his right boot, and kicked over a point after a powerful run - having missed a '45 off the post a minute earlier - that brought Kerry level for the first time in the second half.

Converted a close-range free on 66 minutes to cut the gap to one. Insurance point in the 71st minute as the Derry cover disappeared.

Adrian Spillane - 5

Took a great mark in the 11th minute but kicked the resulting shot wide to the right.

Stephen O'Brien replaced him at half-time.

Paudie Clifford - 6

Kicked Kerry level on 18 minutes, with a nice score off his left near the 21.

After Kerry did well to steal possession, he kicked a ball straight over over the sideline on 38 minutes.

David Clifford - 8

Was a constant danger throughout and had the better of his battle with Chrissy McKaigue for large periods.

Took less than three minutes to cut in from the right and kick his first score. Scored a spectacular point from out right after having to go to ground to pick the ball, before curling it over off his left to bring Kerry level once more.

Was fouled by McKaigue and kicked Kerry ahead once more in the 23rd minute. Kicked Kerry level from a free on 27 minutes as his marker McKaigue was booked. Claimed another mark and point in the first minute of added time. Was booked for a challenge on McGuigan in added time with replays suggesting it was a harsh booking.

Opened Kerry's second half account 70 seconds after the break to leave Kerry just two down, and landed a free on 45 minutes to kick the gap back to one.

Ran at McKaigue on 67 minutes and was fouled, before kicking over the equalising point. Stole a loose ball in midfield before kicking Kerry two ahead on 69 minutes.

Paul Geaney - 6

Quiet early on although gathered some ball and was involved with link play in the Kerry attack. Passed a ball to Sean O'Shea, who played it on White for the opening Kerry goal.

Was lucky to miscontrol a ball along the end line in the 44th minute before being pushed over to earn a scoreable free for Kerry.

Stephen O'Brien - 7

Made a brilliant blockdown on Derry keeper Lynch as he tried to kick a point in the 41st minute. Saw an attempt at an equaliser drop short on 58 minutes, but kicked Kerry ahead on 69 minutes with a lovely score off his left.

Booked on 76 minutes - yellow card for a professional foul.

DERRY

Odhran Lynch - 7

Gave Derry a different dynamic in attack as he moved away from his goal to give them extra numbers going forward.

Made a brilliant save to deny Gavin White a certain goal in the second minute. Scored a bizarre point on 25 minutes, a shot that dropped short, was touched by no one and it bounced over the bar, to draw Derry level.

Saw a couple of attempts at goal blocked down in the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

Chrissy McKaigue - 5

Struggled with Clifford in the early stages. Was booked on 27 minutes for a jersey pull and a possible result of persistent fouling.

Eoin McEvoy - 6

A marauding run forward on 53 minutes set up a score which pushed Derry ahead again, after a Ciaran McFaul point, on 53 minutes.

Conor McCluskey - 5

Got forward impressively and set up scores in the first half, but played an easily read pass after a prolonged period of Derry attack in the 40th minute.

Conor Doherty - 6

Kicked a brilliant score on 42 minutes, jinking past a couple of Kerry defenders to get Derry's first score of the second half and push them two clear. Kicked a wide from distance on 47 minutes as Derry looked to double their lead.

Gareth McKinless - 7

Was a danger throughout for Derry with his powerful runs.

Made a brilliant run for Derry's opening goal and ended up scoring it after the initial effort was saved. Another cracking run ended with Ryan making a brilliant save on 52 minutes.

Was injured deep in second-half stoppage time.

Padraig McGrogan - 6

Swung over a brilliant point in response to the opening Kerry goal, but was injured in the process and replaced after nine minutes.

Conor Glass - 6

Had a proper battle with Diarmuid O'Connor in midfield throughout the day.

Brendan Rogers - 7

Saw a goal chance saved, before McKinless buried the rebound. Claimed a brilliant high ball and was fouled by Diarmuid O'Connor, who was subsequently black-carded for a trip.

In the next attack, he kicked Derry ahead again, and scored a great point on 33 minutes after carrying the ball forward before cutting back inside and curling it over off his right, putting Derry two clear once more.

Niall Toner - 6

Saw an effort on goal saved after McKinless hacked a ball, along the ground, across the goal on 46 minutes

Replaced on 60 minutes.

Paul Cassidy - 6

Kicked a cracking score in the 14th minute, from distance, to put Derry ahead again. Put Derry ahead on 25 minutes with a fine score off his right.

Ethan Doherty - 6

Kicked one wide on 61 minutes as Derry looked to move three clear, pushing a shot for a point across goal and wide to the left.

Ciaran McFaul - 6

Got in on the act in the 30th minute, smashing over a lovely score from distance to push Derry two ahead.

Slotted a lovely score after a great run by Eoin McEvoy on 53 minutes, but kicked one wide from similar range a few minutes later.

Shane McGuigan - 8

Got in on the act with a point from a narrow angle off his left to put Derry ahead by two on 16 minutes, and stood Jason Foley up to kick Derry back into the lead on 19 minutes.

Was poleaxed by Shane Ryan on 32 minutes as he challenged for the ball in midfield and needed treatment, but on 34 minutes he showed great skill and pace to round a Kerry defender, before curling it over off his left to push Derry three ahead.

After being knocked to the ground, he got up to slot over the free to push Derry three clear, and popped over a point from a free on the hour to make it a two-point game.

Kicked Derry's final score on 80 minutes, as he intended to lob a ball in for an equalising goal.

Niall Loughlin - 5

Not his best afternoon as he was kept scoreless for the 70 minutes.

Came on for the injured McGrogan and got 40 minutes before being replaced himself by Benny Heron.
