St Mary's come from behind to win Leitrim decider

St Mary's came from behind in the second half to overturn a five-point Mohill interval lead to coast home convincing winners of an entertaining Leitrim final in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Player of the match Paul Keaney opened the scoring with a third minute pointed free for St Mary's.

But Mohill levelled matters in space of two minutes with an Alan McLoughlin and grabbed the lead when Keith Beirne pointed a seventh-minute mark

Another pointed Keaney free brought St. Mary's on level terms some five minutes later. It was still even again on the 23-minute mark after Keaney converted a St Mary's free and Mohill's Oisin Madden replied with a similar score from play.

Mary's failed to raise a flag from the remainder of the first half. But Mohill upped their game in this period with Sean Harkin finishing to the St. Mary's net while Keith Beirne added points on either side of Harkin's strike. to give his side a 1-05 to 0-03 half-time lead.

St. Mary's narrowed the gap within two minutes of the restart when Paul Keaney put a placed ball over the Mohill crossbar. After that the game's turning point was reached on 37 minutes when James McGrail finished a high dropping ball from close range to the Mohill net.

Keith Beirne answered with a point for Mohill almost immediately when he opened his side's second half account. In response St. Mary's hit back with points by Oisin Bohan and Paul Keaney to level matters at the beginning of the final quarter.

A spectacularly hit 47th minute Paul Keaney point from distance on the 47-minute mark put St Mary's back in front for the first time since the opening score 44 minutes earlier.

Keaney's score stated a decisive surge for the St. Mary's men when they blew the Mohill challenge out of the water with five more unanswered points over the next 11 minutes.

In this period of Mary's dominance, Jack Casey fired over two points for his side, while Conor Farrell, Conor Hackett and Paul Keaney (free) chipped in with a point each.

Mary's ended the game with 14 players after James McGrail was dismissed for second yellow card on 58 minutes.

Beirne closed the scoring in the game with a late pointed Mohill free, which was his and his side's second point in the final 30 minutes of the action.
