All-Ireland football qualifiers - round 1

Saturday

Cork v Louth, Páirc Uí Chaoimh, 2pm

Cork did very well against Kerry in Munster for 50 minutes. When Seán Powter and Micheál Martin had to go off it was definitely a significant loss for them. They ended up with a heavy defeat but I think it would have given them hope.

Louth have had a great year, winning Division 3 of the Allianz League. Cork at home though should win.

Verdict: Cork

Mayo v Monaghan, Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, 4pm

That's the best game on Saturday. Both of these sides would have ideas of going a good bit further.

Mayo are still reliant on a lot of those old warriors but they were very poor against Galway in the championship, and in the league final against Kerry.

Monaghan, beaten by Derry, couldn't pick their way through the Derry defence even though they had a lot of possession. Mayo won the corresponding league match by two points but I think Monaghan could go to Castlebar, it's not a fortress anymore, so I'll tip Monaghan.

Verdict: Monaghan

Monaghan beat Mayo in the league

Clare v Meath, Ennis, 6pm

It certainly wasn't the most exciting game when the met in the league. It was a rather turgid, finishing up 0-10 to 0-09 for Meath.

It may not be an open or exciting game of football again but I hope for a Meath win. It will be difficult down there in Ennis.

Verdict: Meath

Sunday

Armagh v Tyrone, Athletic Grounds, 1.30pm (Live on RTÉ2, RTÉ Player and RTÉ Radio 1 Extra)

A great game altogether. When they met in the league back in February it was like an early St Valentine's Day massacre. There were five sent off, and Armagh won by two goals.

Tyrone haven't been going well, they could do with a bit of freshness. Maybe bringing in the likes of Ruairí Canavan, who was such a star for the U20s in their All-Ireland campaign.

Whoever wins this one will be a tough opponent for others later. Tyrone are All-Ireland champions for a reason and I think they'll get back to winning ways.

Verdict: Tyrone

Tailteann Cup (southern section)

Saturday

Offaly v New York, Tullamore, 2pm

Offaly are onto their fourth championship match. They were beaten by Wexford in Leinster, beat them in the Tailteann Cup, and then did the same to Wicklow last weekend.

New York have had one game, where they were beaten by Sligo - a very close and competitive game in New York. But it's hard to see anything other than a comprehensive Offaly win in this one.

John Maughan has embraced the competition and Niall McNamee is on fire at 35 years old.

Verdict: Offaly

Sunday

Carlow v Westmeath, Newtwatch Cullen Park, 2pm

If one team caused a big upset last week it was Carlow beating Tipperary. Carlow had a very poor Allianz League campaign, while Tipp had reached the Division 4 final.

Westmeath beat Longford and lost to Kildare in Leinster. They beat Laois last week in the Tailteann Cup, and they'll be heavy favourites to win this one.

Verdict: Westmeath

Sligo and Leitrim have met twice already this year

Tailteann Cup (northern section)

Sunday

Leitrim v Sligo, Avant Money Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, 3pm

This is going to be a very interesting game in Carrick-on-Shannon. In the league game between them Sligo won it but Leitrim had a good win over London.

And the biggest scalp of all last week was them beating Antrim last week, a Division 3 team. Sligo beat London after extra time so there's a direct link between the two teams through that London form.

I think a home win for Leitrim is quite a probability here.

Verdict: Leitrim

Fermanagh v Cavan, Brewster Park, 4pm

This is the big game of the round. Cavan would probably feel that they shouldn't even be in this competition and this offers a route back to the Sam Maguire next year if they win it, even if they don't get out of the third division.

Fermanagh are building quietly under Kieran Donnelly and they beat Longford last week. Cavan had a comprehensive win over Down and I would say that Mickey Graham, and Cavan people in general, feel that the are better than a lot of teams in the qualifiers and they probably are.

Verdict: Cavan
