Tyrone may be without captain Sean Cavanagh for the start of their Ulster Championship as he continues to struggle with knee problems.

The Red Hands take on Donegal in their Ulster Championship preliminary round clash on May 17 and it was believed that Cavanagh was on course to be fit for that game.

However a report in the Belfast Telegraph claims that the Moy man underwent surgery on his knee injury last week and the recovery time from such an operation would leave him in doubt for the May date.

Cavanagh has managed the injury throughout his side's Allianz Football League Division 1 campaign, which saw Tyrone relegated.

There is better news elsewhere for Tyrone however as manager Mickey Harte took training on Tuesday night after he himself recovered from a surgical procedure.

Harte had missed Tyrone's final league game, a draw with Kerry, and had been recovering for the past three weeks.
