Opening day wins for Monaghan and DCU in the McKenna and Bord Na Móna O'Byrne Cups

The first day of the 2015 GAA season saw Monaghan get the better of UUJ in the Dr McKenna Cup by four points - while in the Bord Na Móna O'Byrne Cup, DCU had ten points to spare over Longford. 

Monaghan had to withstand a late comeback from UUJ in their clash at Castleblayney, eventually emerging victorious on a 0-20 to 2-10 scoreline.

The inside forward line of Daniel McKenna, Brendan McElroy and Christopher McKenna notched up 0-15 between them as Malachy O'Rourke's side held sway for most of the encounter.They moved nine points clear with just over ten minutes remaining. 

Two goals late on Derry's Caolan O'Boyle cut Monaghan's lead to two points. However, points from Daniel McKenna and McElroy eased the home side's nerves as they ran out four-point winners.

At Pearse Park, DCU ran out 3-13 to 0-11 winners against Longford, with Enda Smyth, Conor McGraynor and Evan Keane among the goals.
