James Kavanagh has called time on his inter-county career, a year after switching allegiance from Kildare to Galway.
The two-time All Star nominee, who is now based in Galway working as a Garda, featured in Tribesmen's Allianz Football League and Championship campaigns but his year was hampered by several injuries.
And now Kavanagh has confirmed that he is hanging up his inter-county boots once and for all and that will not be available to new Galway boss Kevin Walsh.
Speaking in Wednesday’s Irish Independent, Kavanagh said: "I've given it enough, I have given it as much as I can. Between work and family now I just don't have the five or six days to give it that you need for inter-county.
"It was the first year ever that I had such injuries. I have always had a bit of knee trouble but I've always been able to get by on it. I might be getting old.
"I reckon it could have been a change of lifestyle. I'm getting home from training and I am not getting the full night's sleep.
"I'm not saying the kids have me up all night but I'm doing other things rather than just training and going to work.
"I probably wasn't looking after myself outside of training as much as I needed to be. I was probably caught with injuries that I was never caught with.
"I am delighted I did do the year with Galway. I know so many more throughout the county."
Kavanagh grew up in Galway and played on the St Jarlath’s team in the early 2000s.
He was part of the Kildare Under-21 team that won the Leinster title in 2004 and made his senior debut the following year.
