Roscommon manager John Evans praised Leitrim for the manner in which they finished a FBD League opener played in difficult conditions in Elphin on Sunday.

The Rossies failed to make wind advantage count in the first period as they only led by only 0-02 to 0-01, with 27 frees awarded in the half alone.

Points from Emlyn Mulligan, Gerry Hickey, and two from Conor Beirne condemned Evans to defeat in his first match in charge of the county, losing 0-07 to 0-06.

Evans told RTÉ: "It is good to be up and running. No doubt about it. I suppose you would like to have a win the first day out but we were trying out a lot and it was a very, very experimental team.

"We had another four or five players (substituted) on as the game went on and it is the first game of the year.

"We would have liked to have won but we didn't and fair play to Leitrim I thought they kicked some wonderful points in the last 10 minutes in particular.

"They kicked four points, where definitely three were out near the 45 with the wind, so all credit to them.

"It was trying conditions but we’ll look forward to next Sunday."
