Substitute Donncha O'Connor’s second-half goal helped Cork to a seven-point victory over Cork IT in the preliminary round of the McGrath Cup.

The Rebels held a three-point lead at the break, 0-08 to 0-05, as the hosts made sure that it wasn’t all one-way traffic at Cork IT.

However, points from Odhran Mulrooney and Sean Kiely helped Conor Counihan’s men into a quarter-final tie with Tipperary next weekend.

In the other game of the day, Mick O’Dwyer saw his new Clare outfit trounce Limerick IT by 18 points at Milltown-Malbay, 1-20 to 1-02.

The Banner led by 1-11 to 1-00 at the break and there was no way back for the students as Clare added nine points after the resumption.
