Holders Tyrone edged out Derry in a close-fought McKenna Cup round one clash in Omagh.

The sides were level at 0-07 apiece at the break but Conor McAlliskey’s late goal for the Red Hands proved to be the difference in the end.

Sean Cavanagh scored seven points (five frees) as Tyrone emerged victorious by 1-14 to 0-15 in front of 4,089 spectators at Healy Park.

Down had two points to spare over Cavan in an entertaining contest at Breffni Park.

The sides were level at half-time, 0-08 to 1-05, with Paul McComiskey goaling for the Mourne men after just five minutes.

Cavan did take the lead in the second half but late scores from Down’s Liam Doyle and Ryan Kelly saw them over the line.

Elsewhere, Monaghan saw off St Mary’s in Clones by 1-13 to 2-07, and Antrim secured victory for new manager Frank Dawson with a three-point margin over UUJ, 1-15 to 2-09, at Casement Park.

Kevin O'Boyle scored the Saffron's only goal.
