Mayo captain Andy Moran's knee injury likely to rule him out for rest of season

Mayo’s worst fears have been realised after it was confirmed that captain Andy Moran’s knee injury is likely rule him out for the rest of the season.

It a statement released today, the Mayo County Board said a scan Moran had yesterday showed he had suffered “significant knee ligament damage”.

The board said further medical advice will be sought in the coming days.

“It is likely Andy Moran will miss the remainder of the season,” the statement said.

“Andy Moran has been a real leader on the team all year and will continue to do so. Andy Moran will still play a major role in the Mayo Senior Football team on their All-Ireland campaign this year.

"We wish Andy a speedy recovery and no doubt will see him back again soon.”

Moran’s absence will be a major blow to the Westerners’ hopes of All-Ireland success, and his misfortune was one of the few negatives to come out of their superb 3-18 to 2-09 quarter-final victory over Down at Croke Park.

The injury came out of an innocuous second-half incident in which the Ballaghaderreen clubman got his foot caught in the turf, and his knee buckled under him.
