Cork manager Conor Counihan praised Colm O’Neill for another telling performance in the Allianz Football League final win over Mayo at Croke Park.
The forward has been on the comeback trail this year after he sustained a cruciate knee injury in a league match with Galway last March. Counihan said: “When we are in training or in any match there is not anybody else you want to see at the end of the ball in terms of a goal-scoring chance.
"It is fantastic for him because it was 12 months of hard work to get back here and it was a great performance.”
The Cork boss was disappointed with the first half display by his men as they trailed by four points at the break against James Horan’s team.
He has targeted further improvement ahead of the summer: “First half we wouldn’t have been pleased and again that was a bit of weakness on our part not showing the correct intensity and in fairness to Mayo they push on and took advantage.
“With the four point lead we knew we had to get together in the first half because the wind was not as big advantage as it might have seemed. When we got in at half-time we said lets settle it down a bit and stop giving the ball away and exact a bit more pressure.
“We did that but I’m disappointed with the first half and we took half-time to wake up. When we did wake up, we got a few breaks, got the goals at the right time but Mayo were always in there with a shout.
“There is plenty of room for work. We’ll enjoy tonight but the lads will have club games next week and or two the week after so we’ll get focused for the Championship on 10 June because that will be a big game for us.”
