Stynes memorial service is held

Hundreds of people have attended a memorial mass for the late Jim Stynes, the former All-Ireland winning footballer turned Australian Rules player, who died in Australia last week.

Among those that attended the service at Ballyroan Church in his former home parish of Knocklyon were the Australian Ambassador to Ireland Bruce Davis, the Director General of the GAA Padraic Duffy and former player and manager, Colm O'Rourke.

The 45-year-old will be given a state funeral in Melbourne in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Stynes spent his life in Australia after leaving Ireland aged 18 in 1984.

During the service, memorabilia, including a number of footballs and jerseys, were brought to the altar. A musical piece was also played by Finbar Furey.
