Westmeath forward Fergal Wilson has called time on his inter-county football career.

A series of niggling injuries forced the 31-year-old Tubberclair man into the decision as he found it hard to reach the fitness levels required for the Westmeath squad.

He will continue to play club football.

Wilson told The Westmeath Examiner: "I had a good few chats with Pat Flanagan, and decided to call it a day.

"The main reason is that I have been picking up a good few niggling injuries over the past couple of years, and have struggled to reach the fitness levels needed for inter-county football."

"Playing inter-county football is also extremely time consuming, you’re talking four or five nights training each week, then games, and then the amount of preparation that goes into it," he added.

Wilson won an Under-21 All-Ireland title in 1999 and 2004 Leinster title with the Lake County.
