Gerry Cooney has been confirmed as the new Offaly football manager after a prolonged search by the county board.

Tom Cribbin had stepped down as manager in the aftermath of the Faithful county’s championship exit at the hands of Limerick in July.

The delay in finding a new manager had caused frustration amongst the panel and star forward Niall McNamee indicated that he may quit the inter-county scene due to the length of the process.

A seven- man interview committee had spoken to Jack Sheedy and Tom Coffey but in the end decided to go with the Meath man who was a selector in 2006, when Offaly last reached a Leinster final.

The county board also ratified Ollie Baker as hurling manager in their meeting on Thursday night.
