Former All-Ireland football winning Meath captain Peter McDermott has passed away, aged 92.

McDermott, who was famously known as the 'the man in the cap' won two All-Ireland medals with the Royals and was also the referee for two finals.

The Navan O'Mahonys clubman led Meath out when they beat Kerry in 1954 and had featured at left corner-forward in the first Meath win of 1949.

He also refereed the 1953 decider between Kerry and Armagh and 1956’s final between Cork and Galway.
